DAISY BATES (1) was an English journalist who came out to Australia in the mid 1800s and lived with the Aboriginal people for 20 years. She wrote ninety volumes about their traditions and culture which are still being studied by anthropologists. The aborigines believed she was the reincarnation of their great grandmother and entrusted her with all their ancient stories; from hunting to languages to ceremonies both male and female. She rode 3,000 miles in a side-saddle, droving cattle before she lived with them. Her remarkable book "The Passing of the Aborigines' is testament to her ability to record in detail their languages for she witnessed first-hand the disintegration of their stone age culture juxtapositioning her practical engagement with them.
